Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are pleased to announce the Frank D. Ruggiero Memorial Scholarship. Frank, one of our earliest committee members, passed away in May of 1999. A tribute to Frank remains part of our Great Race website.

 

 

One $ 500.00 award will be given to an individual who has the following criteria:

  • Any past or 2010 participant (competitor or volunteer) in the Great Race who will enroll in any college during the fall of 2010.

 

  • Commitment to Community Service
    • Frank Ruggiero displayed a passionate commitment to teamwork and community service, and held an unwavering belief that what we give to the world is more important than what we get from it. Thus, the winner of this award is the person who demonstrates to us that he or she best exemplifies this way of living and thinking.

 

Special Notes:

 

  • Further details can be obtained on the Great Race Website (www.great-race.com).
  • Candidates for the award can apply and win more than once.
  • The deadline for applying for the award is April 30, 2010(postmarked).
  • A scholarship committee will determine the winner of the award and contact the recipient in writing by May 18, 2010.  A certificated detailing the scholarship award will be sent to the winner’s school.
  • The money will be paid directly to the college in which the winner is enrolled.
  • If the winner is receiving a “full ride” scholarship to their designated college, they will receive the recognition of the award, but the actual money will be paid on behalf of the second place winner.

Ruggiero Memorial award Application Requirements

 

  1. Basic identification information consisting of your name, address, phone number, college you will be attending, and a description of your participation in the Great Race. You must also end this with the following language: “I herby give the Ruggiero Memorial Award Committee permission to contact any person who recommends me for this award.” Then sign your name.

 

  1. A typed, printed or neatly handwritten essay, not to exceed 1000 words, separate from the basic identification information, explaining why you meet the donor’s criteria of this award: that you have a passionate commitment to teamwork and community service, and that you have an unwavering belief that what we give to the world is more important than what we get from it.

 

  1. No more than two recommendations signed by the person or persons recommending you , specifying why you meet the criteria for this award, with his or her name, address and phone number typed, printed, or neatly handwritten.

 

  1. Completed applications and recommendations must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2010.
