What are the criteria for this award?

The donor of this award has stated, and we agree, that Frank Ruggiero displayed a passionate commitment to teamwork and community service, and held an unwavering belief that what we give to the world is more important than what we get from it. Thus, the winner of this award is the person who demonstrates to us that he or she best exemplifies this way of living and thinking.

Who may apply?

Any past or 2008 participant in the Great Race who will enroll or will resume his or her studies in any college in the semester immediately following this year's race (Fall of 2008).

Who is a participant?

A competitor for a registered team in the Great Race or a Great Race volunteer worker.

Who may not apply?

Immediate family members of any member of the Great Race Committee

How much is the award?

$500

To whom will it be paid?

Directly to the college in which the winner is enrolled.

Where can I get the details on what to submit?

What if the winner is receiving a "full ride" (tuition, fees, books, room, board)?

He or she will receive the recognition of winning the award, but the actual prize will be paid on behalf of the second place winner.

How will the winner be notified?

The winner will be contacted directly by the scholarship committee. The recepient of the award will be notified by a letter by May 28th. A certificate detailing the scholarship award will be sent to the winner's school. The money will be sent directly to the winner's college at the beginning of the fall semester.

Who will decide the winner?

A scholarship committee chosen by the organizers of the Great Race.

What is the deadline?

All applications must be postmarked no later than May 8, 2008.

Basic identification information consisting of your name, address, phone number, college you will be attending, and a description of your participation in the Great Race. You must also end this with the following language: "I hereby give the Ruggiero Memorial Award Committee permission to telephone any person who recommends me for this award." Then sign your name.

A typed, printed or neatly handwritten essay, not to exceed 1000 words, separate from the basic identification information, explaining why you meet the donor's criteria of this award: that you have a passionate commitment to teamwork and community service, and that you have an unwavering belief that what we give to the world is more important than what we get from it.

No more than two recommendations, not to exceed 500 words, signed by the person or persons recommending you, specifying why you meet the criteria of for this award, with his or her name, address and phone number typed, printed, or neatly handwritten.

Completed applications and recommendations must be postmarked no later than May 8, 2008.
